Her sixth studio album (seventh if you count the holiday album Wrapped In Red) was pretty much dead. I was already counting down to her next era. Thanks to an emotional performance on American Idol that went viral, the title track and the album has found a second wind.
The day after her watercooler performance, Kelly Clarkson headed to the studio to record the song again but with the same piano arrangement she used the night before. As a result, “Piece By Piece” cracks the Top 10, settling in at No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100.
It probably would’ve been higher but her American Idol video didn’t count. These days, video views and streams are factored in to Billboard’s algorithm but the Idol clip wasn’t categorized as “music” so therefore the views don’t contribute to their chart. Damn technicalities.
She also created Billboard history this week. Find out what below.
“Piece By Piece” is Clarkson’s 11th Hot 100 top 10, the most among all Idol alums. Speaking of alums, the 33-year-old singer made history this week. She is the first American Idol contestant to “earn 100 chart-toppers, counting all national, domestic music charts (current, recurrent and catalog) compiled by Billboard.” The track topped Billboard’s Digital Songs and Pop Digital Songs this week.
Carrie Underwood is the closest with 83 under her belt. To find out where all the other Idols fall, head over to Billboard.

Piece By Piece the album also saw a spike. It soared all the way to No. 6 this week on the Billboard Top 200 after being at the very bottom last week. Congrats Kelly.
