Poor Kelly Clarkson. Anything wedding-related hasn’t worked out for her. Her country track “Tie It Up” hasn’t done well on the charts and she nixed her big wedding in favor of eloping. And now this.
The original American Idol shelled over $235,000 to purchase a ring previously owned by Jane Austen. According to USA Today, she planned on wearing it as her engagement ring. Problem is, a committee review denied Kelly’s application to export it from the UK. They deemed it should stay in the country since it’s an heirloom.
A fundraising campaign was launched to raise enough money to purchase it back from Clarkson. In the end, nearly $240,000 was donated. The ring is now expected to go on display at the Jane Austen museum in the delightful village of Chawton. For her part, Kelly isn’t at all bitter about the whole debacle.
“The ring is a beautiful national treasure and I am happy to know that so many Jane Austen fans will get to see it at Jane Austen’s House Museum.” – Clarkson
