Can you picture anyone else playing Jack Dawson instead of Leonardo DiCaprio? Well, it almost happened. In a never-before-seen clip, Kate Winslet is seen sharing dialogue with Jeremy Sisto in her screen test for Titanic. The Clueless actor who now stars in ABC’s Suburgatory, eventually lost out the role to DiCaprio. I like Sisto, but Leonardo was definitely destined to star in the 1997 iconic film. Winslet was only 19-years-old at the time with only a handful of movie roles to her name.
“A 19-year-old girl who was going to carry a film of that scale on her shoulders, it’s a huge responsibility. You’re standing on set surrounded by 2,000 extras and all the lights and cameras are pointed at you. If you don’t pull it off, it doesn’t work. A lot of people would have imploded at that, but she didn’t.” – James Cameron
Winslet beat out a lot of actresses to play the role. Eliza Dushku came very close to securing the part. Other ladies at one point considered for the role of Rose include Drew Barrymore, Claire Danes, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Winona Ryder, Tori Spelling, Reese Witherspoon, Gabrielle Anwar, Claire Forlani, Jennifer Aniston, Nicole Kidman and even Madonna. Yup, Madonna. LOL. You can check out website, Not Starring, to see a complete list and reasons why some actresses lost out on the role.
For the men’s side, The Dark Knight’s Christian Bale openly campaigned for the role, but was passed over because Cameron didn’t want two British actors playing the lead parts. Billy Crudup, Brad Pitt, Matthew McConaughey, Chris O’Donnell, River Phoneix, Johnny Depp and even Macaulay Culkin were also in the running. Imagine if any combination of the aforementioned men or ladies starred in Titanic instead of Winslet and DiCaprio. I don’t know if the movie would’ve become the huge blockbuster without Kate and Leo’s chemistry. Just check out Winslet’s screen test with Sisto below and witness the lack of magic.
