Designer Kate Spade Dead At 55 In Apparent Suicide

The fashion industry lost an icon today. Famed handbag designer Kate Spade is dead at the age of 55.

According to TMZ, Spade was found dead in her New York home from an apparent suicide. A NYPD source says she was found by her housekeeper, hanged by a scarf she allegedly had tied to a doorknob. There are also reports that a suicide note was found.

Kate Spade Handbags was formed in 1993 with Kate and her husband Andy Spade. She sold the company in 2007 and launched a new brand in 2016 called Francis Valentine, after her daughter.

“Kate Spade, the visionary founder of our brand, has passed. Our thoughts are with her family at this incredibly heartbreaking time. We honor all the beauty she brought into this world,” the statement from the Kate Spade brand read on their official Twitter account.

Our condolences go out to Spade’s family and friends at this time. She is survived by her husband and daughter. She’s also the sister-in-law of actor David Spade and aunt to actress Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel).
