When it was announced Joseph Fiennes (Shakespeare In Love) would play Michael Jackson, naturally controversy and backlash erupted. It’s certainly a bold casting choice to say the least. We finally have our first look at Fiennes playing the “gloved one.”
Urban Myths is an eight-episode comedy that explores stories that have been passed down over time and have now become part of urban folklore. The scenes involving Michael Jackson are based on an article published in Vanity Fair back in 2011.
According to the piece, MJ, who was in New York during the 9/11 attacks, hit the road to escape the mayhem and return back home to Neverland. Elizabeth Taylor and Marlon Brando, who were in NYC at the time to watch his concert at Madison Square Garden, reportedly joined him on the road trip.
The trio allegedly got as far as Ohio in a car they drove themselves. According to folklore, Brando insisted on stopping at various fast food restaurants during the trip. Stockard Channing and Brian Cox play Taylor and Brando respectively in the television series.
Urban Myths debuts on Thursday, January 19 on Sky Arts. The series also explores a teenage Hitler applying for art school, Muhammad Ali trying to save a suicidal man and more. Check out the trailer below.
