Michelle Visage Set To Star In Film About 90s Gay Porn Star Joey Stefano

Joey Stefano was one of the biggest names in the gay porn industry during the 1990s. Over the course of his five-year career, the Philadelphia-raised power bottom appeared in 58 gay adult films and even caught the attention of Madonna. He appeared in two of her music videos and her 1992 book Sex. He also reportedly dated music magnate David Geffen.

His career was cut short when he was found dead in a motel room in Hollywood. It was determined he died of a speedball overdose (a mixture of cocaine, morphine, heroin, and ketamine). He was 26 years old at the time.

Dazed Digital reports that a biopic about the late porn star is in the works. Chad Darnell will direct the project that will chronicle his discovery by drag superstar and porn director Chi Chi LaRue, his rise to fame and untimely death. Darnell became fascinated with Stefano when a copy of a 1996 biography, Wonder Bread and Ecstasy, literally fell at his feet in an L.A. bookstore.

According to the website, Michelle Visage will play Anita, “an amalgam of OTT television hosts that will provide a through-line for the film.” She won’t be the only RuPaul’s Drag Race star appearing in the film. All-Stars Season 2 winner Alaska will play the part of Gender, “a make-up artist who played in the band Johnny Depp Clones with Chi Chi LaRue and Chris Green. At the time, they were some of the biggest names in the biz, alongside actors like Jeff Stryker, Jon King, and Ryan Idol.”

The project is still in its early stages, so not much is known. For more, head over to Dazed Digital.
