The fabulous British singer/songwriter Jessie Ware released the US version of her stunning album Devotion last week and also played both weekends of the Coachella Music Festival.
Not only was I lucky enough to catch her very fun afternoon set in the Mojave tent where the singer donned an adorable blue and white striped skirt with a lace crop top jacket as she charmed the crowd, but I was also able to briefly speak to Jessie about her album, Coachella, and her gay following.
See what Jessie had to say below…
M: Devotion is finally released in the U.S. this week. On the U.S. release we’re given one new song and a remix. How do those songs fit in with the rest of the album?
JW: I think the new one ‘Imagine It Was Us’ wasn’t thinking about where I had come from and missing a bit more dance in the album. We have been playing the record out a lot for the past year and it felt like I wanted a more up beat tune and it meant I got to work with Bashmore again.
The remix of ‘Wildest Moments’ I just so exciting because I always imagined a rapper on that tune and now I am lucky to have A$AP on it.
M: That’s awesome! Now, you’ve acknowledged your gay following before. When did you first become aware that you had a huge gay fan base?
JW: I think when my brother said my tunes were on the jukebox in the London club G.A.Y. He said ‘Jess, you have arrived’.
It was definitely confirmed by the American audiences where I realized there were a lot of gay fans there.
M: Do you think they relate to you in general, or is there a particular song that you think resonates most with your gay fans?
JW: I really don’t know what I’m doing but I am so glad I have a gay following! I feel like “Taking in Water” or “Running” are the ones I get told about a lot.
M: Why do you think your gay fans are so passionate about big female voices such as yours?
JW: I really don’t know! I will have to ask them.
M: I’m sure they’d love to tell you. So, you’re performing at both weekends of the Coachella festival this year – What is it like to be a part of such a big music event and how is it different for you from playing a smaller and more intimate show?
JW: It’s such a treat. I love festivals and have always been intrigued by Coachella. The first weekend was wicked and so different to other festivals. It’s the best looking festival I have ever been to!
M: I’m really looking forward to it! You recently released a beautiful cover of Rihanna’s “Diamonds” Are there any other artists you’re dying to cover or work with?
JW: I really love Frank Ocean. And I’m into Donny Hathaway and Marvin Gaye at the moment. I have so many bloody covers in my set I am nearly a covers band!
M: Haha! Last question – If we were to press play on your iPod, what song would be playing right now?
JW: Chaka Khan – What Cha Gonna Do For Me
M: That’s awesome! Thanks Jessie!
Well, there you have it. The U.S. release of Devotion is available now. Go check it out if you haven’t already. It’s a total gem and she is a total sweetheart. If you get a chance to see her show, DO IT!
