Janet Jackson’s ‘The Velvet Rope’ Celebrates 20th Anniversary

The Velvet Rope is the sixth studio album by Janet Jackson. The album released on October 7, 1997 was her first through Virgin after renewing with the label for an unprecedented $80 million. It was the largest recording contract in history at that time.

The LP didn’t reach the heights of her previous efforts, Control, Rhythm Nation 1814 or janet, but it topped the Billboard Top 200 and sold 3.65 million copies domestically and over 10 million worldwide.

The Velvet Rope also spawned several hit singles. “Got ’til It’s Gone” won the 1998 Grammy Award for Best Music Video and “Together Again” became her best-selling single of her career.

To mark the album’s 20th anniversary, I thought it was only fitting to walk down memory lane. Check out the music videos filmed to support the album below. I also ranked them. Weigh in afterward if you agree/disagree with my rankings.
