The 51-year-old diva will receive the Icon Award at the 2018 Billboard Music Awards. Established in 2011, the honor recognizes an artist’s cultural impact, both inside and outside of the music industry. Past recipients include Neil Diamond (2011), Stevie Wonder (2012), Prince (2013), Jennifer Lopez (2014), Céline Dion (2016) and Cher (2017).
From 1990 to 2001, Janet has earned 18 Billboard Music Award nominations, winning 10 times. In addition to receiving the award, Jackson is set perform a medley of her hits. Her highly-anticipated performance will be her first on television in nine years.
The 2018 BBMAs take place on Sunday, May 20. Kelly Clarkson will host the event with scheduled performances by BTS, Camila Cabello, Ariana Grande, Dua Lipa and Shawn Mendes.
As a hardcore Janet fan, I’m beyond excited that she’s finally getting her due. Her career never really rebounded after nipplegate. Hopefully, this is a signaling of a Janet renaissance.
