Spurred by a recent article by Nic who lamented the loss of new music that makes him tingle in places only his boyfriend is allowed to go, I posted a music video (“Gay Pirates”) that totally floored my lonely heart and am following it up with this post about a recent gem I found all on my own… umm heard about from a friend… umm stumbled onto at a concert… FINE, I saw it on an episode of “One Tree Hill”- are you happy??
Set during the tragic storm/murder/love scene, We Were Promised Jetpacks’ “It’s Thunder and It’s Lightning” is the perfect accessory to any ruminating, emo, alt rock boy and girl’s collection. An endearing reference to the cry of grown up 60s boys and girls who thought we’d be livin’ on the moon by now, this Edinburgh 2003-formed band has relocated to Scotland’s capitol in Glasgow and is slowly taking (at least my world) by storm- excuse the pun. Headed by amazing lead vocalist Adam Thompson, the boys have put out an album entitled “These Four Walls” which unfortunately suffers from lack of radio-edit intervention. By that I mean that while there’s a brilliant 2-3 minutes in the middle of most of the tracks, it’s surrounded by much too much instrumental preamble and tail-end unnecessary-ness. Still, the lead track- and the focus of this article is worth the “purchase” (by which, of course I mean download ;)
So, the song. It’s a love story of booze, pain and anguish that translates to even the saddest of us single boys and I’m sure it resonates that much more with the coupled guys n’ gals as well. Tracing his way through a date and the love/hate that ensues, We Were Promised Jetpacks tugs on the ol’ heartstrings with not just their simple n’ sweet lyrics but with an adorable accent that has you re-listening not just cause it’s such a great song, but because you need to to understand all the words ha.
The rise and falls of this song by far are what make it, but what really gets me going is the increasingly frustrated cry of: “Your body was black and blue” until Adam (both the lead singer, and me while in the car haha) screams out so hurt that he can’t finish the whole line… maybe I’m falling too much for the song, but I’m kind of completely okay with that. Regardless of what I think, I’m puttin’ it up in the hopes of at least having one convert. Sad face, the band hasn’t produced a video for this one yet, so you’ll have to settle for now for amazing lyrics and soulful sounds. It’s perfection nonetheless.
I’m throwing in the lyrics because, as I said, Adam’s accent is a BIT tricky to follow.
Right foot
followed by her left foot
We gotta get you home
before your curfew
and into your bed.
Standing
on our tiptoes
peering through
open windows
I swear I heard my name.
Stitting
with the lights off
waiting for my brain to start
trying to work things out
It’s thunder
and it’s lightning
and it’s all things
too frightening
I could barely see outside.
Your body was black and blue
It struck twice there’s nothing new
Your body was black and blue
It struck twice there’s nothing new
Your body was black and blue
Your body was black and blue
Your body was black and blue
Your body was black and blue
Your body was black and blue
Your body was black and blue
Your body was black and blue
Your body was black.
And it’s thunder
and it’s lightening
coming home.
And it’s thunder
and it’s lightening
coming back.
Your body was black and blue
Your body was black and blue
and your body…
I have to say goodnight
I’m leaving before you’re punching out my lights
I have to say goodnight
I’m leaving before you’re punching out my lights
I have to say goodnight
I’m leaving before you’re punching out my lights
I’m leaving

Oh man! First time writer long time reader, but this song kind of rocked me. Thanks for posting this up and introducing me to a band that will be on rotation well into the new year.

Jose: Thanks so much for the long time readership and even more for writin’ in! Love to hear what you think either way ha.
Listening to their album there’s a LOT of quality, but i’m a “get to the good stuff” right away guy so the lengthy preamble is sometimes a bit much for me but they’re a killer band to be sure!
I’ve posted two other recent articles about other bands I’m into right now with some music vids… particularly the dan mangan one might interest you if you haven’t seen it yet- not too dissimilar from this band in the heart-wrenching lyrics and unbelievable lead singer sound!
