With the last update of the iPhone (3.0), came a quiet little feature called tethering. What this does is it allows the option to use your existing data plan that you may have with your iPhone and use that to connect your computer to the internet. In essence, it turns your phone into a portable modem. Over the past few months I’ve found this incredibly helpful when I needed to connect my computer and I wasn’t around a WiFi source. Working at the park is increasing becoming an easier reality.
Here are some helpful tips.
- Be SURE you are on a data plan. If not, you could easily rack up hundreds or thousands of dollars an data charges
- You need to be on an 3G network, so you will need a 3G (or 3Gs) iPhone
- Don’t expect the same speed as your cable or ADSL connection that you may be used to
- Dont download huge files. Leave your music and movie downloads for when you have a faster connections
- Don’t Roam! You can use your data anywhere in Canada, but you will be dinged big time if you leave
Fido and Rogers customers in Canada can activate tethering right away, but it still in the works of being provided in other countries. However, there are workarounds.
