Boo. I had such high hopes for this week. After last week’s surprisingly excellent Shania Twain week. Couple that with being a pseudo “Standards Week”, I had huge expectations. Traditionally, whenever the contestants take on big band week, everyone does really well. In a season of disappointments, the contestants cumulatively once again provided little to cheer about.

In their defense this week, Harry Connick Jr. was partially to blame. Considering this genre is his expertise, I found his music arrangements to be on the dull side and quite boring actually. Perhaps he sabotaged them on purpose, so that it’ll make what he does on his albums, that much more impressive.

5. Casey James

Performance: Blue Skies by Casey James
Way to pick a perfect time to choke. None of the judges nor I were particularly impressed with him this week. Kara even referred to him sounding like a lamb whenever he utilized his vibrato. With last week’s surprising placement in the bottom two, despite a superb performance, Casey is in serious trouble this week. It’s a shame though, out of all the guys… when he’s on, he’s my favorite.

4. Aaron Kelly

Performance: Fly Me To The Moon by Frank Sinatra
Vocally he had the goods to deliver this, but unfortunately his lack of cool-cat swagger ruined any chances of a credible performance. At moments he sounded great, but more often than not he looked awkward on stage. As a side note, I liked his hair parted slick to one side instead of the usual too-thin-to-spike hairstyle he normally sports.

3. Crystal Bowersox

Performance: Summer Wind by Frank Sinatra
Oh Crystal, you better pick up your game next week. America can forgive one sub-par performance and maybe even two, but three strikes you are out. With two weeks in a row of being place in the middle of the show and receiving lukewarm comments from the judges, Crystal is slowly losing her lead over the other presumed finalist, Lee DeWyze. They need a “Lilith Fair” or Jewel theme next week so that Crystal can get her mojo back.

2. Lee DeWyze

Performance: That’s Life by Frank Sinatra
Of all the finalists, he looked the part. He could seamlessly be pictured hanging out with Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr. et al. This week’s recipient of the coveted pimp spot (though it did crap all for Siobhan last week), Lee was set up to receive “best of the night” compliments from the judges. Right on cue, the judges didn’t disappoint and heaped Lee with massive praise and marked him the one to beat. Blah blah blah. He wasn’t that great. In a night of mediocrity, he inched passed the grading curve.

1. Michael Lynche

Performance: The Way You Look Tonight
Yup, he made it on top of my list again. Sure he’s not popular with most viewers, including me, but for me, he truly was the best tonight. Maybe it was because he picked the best song of the night, or maybe because he simply gave the best range of vocals. Which ever way you look at it, he did a great job and deserves to stay another week.

PREDICTED BOTTOM TWO

If there is any justice left in the American Idol universe, the bottom two should be Aaron and Casey. Ever since Tim left, Aaron has coasted to safety as the sole teenage boy, teeny-booper girls want to vote for. If he avoids the bottom, the only person I could see making an appearance in the bottom this week is Big Mike. No matter how well he does, he doesn’t seem to be able to enable mass forces to vote for him and keep him near the top. No matter what combo shows up, if Casey is in the bottom, I predict he’s the one to leave this week.

SHOULD GO: Casey
WILL GO: Casey
