What do you get when you mix 12 Aussie blokes, seven Outback towns and a cute host? You get one wicked drag competition. Australia’s Channel 10 just released a trailer for their upcoming new talent show titled “I Will Survive“. The show is in the vein of UK’s “How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?” and NBC’s “Grease: You’re the One that I Want!”. This time, however, the show is using the fabulous “Priscilla, Queen of the Desert” as inspiration.”
Hosted by Hugh Sheridan, the show will search for a triple threat performer, proficient in the disciplines of acting, singing, and dancing, to portray a drag queen as based on the hit musical. The contestants will board the famous Priscilla bus and retrace the steps of the movie, from Sydney to Alice Springs.
Originally, the prize was to appear in the New York production of “Priscilla, Queen of the Desert“, but the Broadway show closed in June 2012. Additionally, the London production of the movie also closed previously in December 2011. This left producers of the show scrambling for a new grand prize. Eventually, they offered up a new amended prize which includes a chance to appear in another Broadway show, along with a $250,000 cash prize.
Looks pretty good, right? Celebrity guest judges include Toni Collette (Muriel’s Wedding), Rachael Taylor (Grey’s Anatomy) and Magda Szubanski (Kath & Kim). I can’t wait to watch this show.
Personally, I loved the stage production of Priscilla and don’t understand why both the London and NYC shows shut down. I was lucky enough to check out both shows and had a blast at each one. Thankfully, a rumored touring production is in the works. Be sure to check it out when it comes to a city near you.
