Last week, two of my best friends from Winnipeg surprised me with a little visit to Vancouver. I was so thrilled to see them, spend time with them and of course, share the beauty of the beautiful city I am now calling home. It was great to show them around to all the sights and sounds of the Yaletown, Gastown, Stanley Park and Granville Island. My favorite day came when we discovered a new sandwich shop after an afternoon screening of Thor.
The place is called Hubbub and honestly, it was the best sandwich I have ever tasted. I can truly say that these boys have perfected the sandwich experience and as they put it, it’s taking your mouth on a vacation and I couldn’t agree more. So what’s the story behind this new sandwich shop?
Long ago, we were two guys knee-deep in plans to create a sports bar. On its menu was a sandwich so unforgettable, we ditched the sports bar concept and created this wee shop to serve this life-changing sandwich to others.
Each sandwich has the same base, you just need to pick your protein. The options are pretty standard: chicken, pork, turkey sausage (pictured above) or veggie but you can also order a prawn sandwich. My friends tried that one and loved it while I thoroughly enjoyed my chicken breast sandwich. So what does each sandwich contain?
Every sandwich is made with their soft, but sturdy Baguette which never buckles despite what they put in it. A crisp, big leaf of Romaine Lettuce which they state is the powerhouse of the lettuce world. The Caramelized Onions were what surprised my taste buds the most which were thick, sweet and crunchy. Perfect for this sandwich. Through in a few Jalapenos for a little bit of spice which are mellowed out by the other ingredients in the sandwich and finish it off with their Secret Sauce, you have a sandwich made in heaven. It’s like “sandwich chemistry” reads some text on their store’s wall.
Now, you pick your protein which comes in the following:
Marinated for 24 hours to be spicy and tender, then perfectly slow roasted.
A lightly spiced chorizo handmade by a local butcher.
Steeped in citrus juices and coconut milk. Like a mouth vacation!
Red peppers, eggplant, and zucchini baked with a chili-lime marinade.
White tiger prawns basted in a margarita-style marinade and sauteed to order.
Sounds delicious right? Now here is the part that really caught my attention. If you want to change up your sandwich and remove one of those base ingredients it’ll cost you, 25 cents. Don’t worry, that money is donated to charity. But why mess with a good thing am I right?
These tasty sandwiches also don’t have to stand alone. You can add an awesome side to your meal which include potato chips, a clean slaw, quinoa salad or elote corn which is a half cob brushed with tangy sauce. So good. I highly recommend that one.
So if you are in the downtown Vancouver area and looking for a tasty treat, I highly recommend you try Hubbub Sandwiches. Take a friend, take a co-worker or just go by yourself. You’re mouth will thank you later.
You can also check them out in person at 859 Hornby Street in Downtown Vancouver.
