Hidden Figures Passes La La Land To Become Highest-Grossing Best Picture Nominee

With its record-tying 14 nominations, La La Land is the odds-on favorite to take home Best Picture at the 89th Academy Awards. When it comes to the almighty dollar though, the lavish musical might have to settle for runner-up status.

After this weekend’s box office receipts, the feel-good Hidden Figures has surpassed Damien Chazelle’s modern musical to become the highest-grossing film among this year’s Best Picture nominees. The biographical film has made $119.5 million in North America, while La La Land‘s tally clocks in at $118.2 million. Even more impressive is the fact Hidden Figures has been in theaters for less weeks.

This year’s Best Picture nominees have collectively grossed around $570 million domestically. Hidden Figures and La La Land, however, are the only two to pass the milestone $100 million mark.

While I loved La La Land, I’m rooting for Hidden Figures to pull off an upset at the Oscars. Though a dark horse, the film did nab the Screen Actors Guild’s highest honor, Best Ensemble cast. Who are you hoping wins the Academy Award for Best Picture? Weigh in below.
