Halsey first premiered “Strangers” over a year ago. At long last, the 23-year-old singer has finally released the accompanying visual. And truthfully, it’s not what I expected. In fact, it’s the complete opposite.
“Strangers” is lifted off hopeless fountain kingdom and features Fifth Harmony singer Lauren Jauregui. Since both have publicly declared their bisexuality, Jauregui is the perfect fit for the lesbian anthem produced by Greg Kurstin.
“I just love that Lauren and I are two women who have a mainstream pop presence doing a love song for the LGBT community,” Halsey revealed in an interview with Zach Sang. “It’s unheard of. It’s very rare to see it from a female perspective.”
Rather than engaging in some same-sex love, Halsey and Lauren battle it out in a bloody match in the boxing ring. The Girlfight-inspired video is definitely not the lovefest I envisioned.
However, the clip’s narrative falls in line with the videos filmed for the LP. It continues the Romeo + Juliet-inspired love story that began in “Now Or Never.” She explained the concept via Twitter and apparently it is a bisexual story.
im so proud of the Strangers video Lauren & I trained really hard to pull off those boxing scenes. My heart broke when I saw the 1st cut seeing us get bloodied + bruised and equating it to the metaphor the vid is meant to represent. That’s really how a toxic relationship can feel
Well the male character Solis (meaning sun) is Juliet (“and juliet is the sun”) so my character Luna is Romeo and therefore the moon. Also the moon is often portrayed as a sapphic woman. Rosaline (Rosa) is the woman that Romeo (Luna) desires before he meets Juliet.
It literally IS a bisexual story. Luna has romantic relationships with both Rosa and Solis. Her relationship with a man doesn’t nullify her bisexuality. Not in an imaginary music video universe and not in real life either !!!!!! Ok!!!!!!
