When We Rise marks the reunion for Gus Van Sant and Dustin Lance Black. They previously worked together on Milk which Black snagged an Oscar statue for Best Original Screenplay.

Starting from the Stonewall Riots in 1969, the ABC miniseries “chronicles the personal and political struggles, setbacks and triumphs of a diverse family of LGBT men and women who helped pioneer one of the last legs of the U.S. Civil Rights movement from its turbulent infancy in the 20th century to the once unfathomable successes of today,” according to Variety.

Guy Pearce joins the project as LGBT activist Cleve Jones. He joined the gay liberation movement in 1972 and was befriended by Milk. Jones founded the Names Project AIDS Memorial Quilt and led the National March for Equality in 2009. When We Rise is adapted from his memoir.

Mary-Louise Parker and Rachel Griffiths will also appear in the miniseries. The Weeds actress steps in to play Roma Guy. The women’s rights leader co-founded the San Francisco Women’s Building. Griffiths will play her wife, social justice activist Diane, who also help co-found the Women’s Building. Diane also worked as an HIV/AIDS nurse and social justice activist at San Francisco General Hospital for 33 years.

When We Rise is expected to air during the 2016/2017 television season. Expectations are definitely high given the success of their previous collaboration, Milk. You looking forward to the miniseries? Share your thoughts below.
