Since we’re smack-dab in the middle of Pride season, I thought it was a perfect time to share Grindr’s 10 Commandments for Gay Pride. The gay mobile social app wants to remind the community about what Thou shall or shall not do this Pride season. I’m actually in Portland as we speak, celebrating the Rose City’s pride festivities this weekend. Sufficed to say, I have a couple of traveling companions who’re guilty of some of Grindr’s no-nos.

Even though I’ve gone to major Prides in LA, Sydney, New York, Toronto and London, I have to say, Portland is one of my favorites. It’s big enough that there’s something to do, but small enough that everyone does the same thing. I don’t feel like I’m being tugged by different groups of friends. Even when the weather doesn’t cooperate, I always have a blast.

Grindr’s 10 Commandments For Gay Pride

I. Thou Shall Not Be A Hot Mess

Pride is about having fun, but don’t go overboard. If you’re drinking alcohol be sure to drink a glass of water between cocktails – stay hydrated, stay classy!

II. Thou Shall Not C*ck-Block

Bros before bros … wait. If you’re looking to hook up with someone new, make sure it’s not the man your friend has been eyeing.

III. Thou Shall Dance Like A Drag Queen

More than likely you’ll hear the classics at Pride – Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, Katy Perry – don’t be afraid to let the music take over and dance like no one is watching (although we all are).

IV. Thou Shall Step Out of Your Comfort Zone

Get to know someone new or try something new. March in the parade, dance with a stranger, wear chaps! Even if you don’t like it or get uncomfortable, take a deep breath and enjoy the fact that you tried something new.

V. Thou Shall Meet Thy Neighbor

Fire up your Grindr and Grindr Xtra app, we guarantee everyone will be on it. Chat, flirt and meet with someone in real life, like that guy you’ve been chatting up for 2 weeks! (Make a move already!) After all, that’s why we created Grindr!

VI. Thou Shall Share The Experience With Others

Pride events were created to increase LGBT visibility as a social group, build community, and celebrate sexual diversity. Share your experience on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and other social media sites. And, feel free to use the #grindrpride hash tag.

VII. Thou Shall Spread The Love Safely

At Grindr, we understand that it can get crazy at Pride. If you decide to hook up with someone, just remember to use a latex condom (which we all know, can greatly reduce the risk of an STD).

VIII. Thou Shall Be Prepared

Pride events can last for days! So be prepared with the essentials – sunscreen, water, phone charger, chap stick, condoms – you see where we’re going with this?

IX. Remember The Essence of Pride And Keep It Sacred

As the great prophet Madonna once sang, “Express yourself.” So do just that – sing loudly, live fiercely, and remember that no color is ever too bright. The floats, the pageantry, the outfits and the people who are not ashamed of who they are – take it in and enjoy yourself!

X. Thou Shall Honor Thy Community

The genesis of Pride is to take a positive stance against discrimination and violence toward LGBT community and promote self-affirmation, dignity and equal rights. Keep this in mind as you celebrate and think about ways you can give back to our community all year round.

Which of the pride commandments are you guilty of? What should your naughty penance be for each sinful act *wink* ?
