I spent Christmas in Hawaii this year and one of the things I wanted to do but didn’t get around to was shark cage diving. I’m deathly afraid of sharks, but have always been equally fascinated by them ever since I was a kid. I was obsessed with Baywatch and Jaws movies. I actually randomly ended up getting a shark tattoo on my left shoulder while I was there. Anyway, after watching this video – I’m not so sure shark cage diving is for me.
While vacationing in Gansbaai, South Africa, a man named Bryan Plummer decided to go shark cave diving with friends. He filmed as his recently married friend Roger was in the cage and instead of the shark going for the bait, he went for Roger and it was caught on video. Here’s what Plummer had to say about the incident:
“I went shark diving March 21st, 2013 for the first time in Gansbaai, South Africa with my sister Leanne Plummer and best friends Peter Lipscombe, Richard Lipscombe and Monica Kronfli .. and managed to catch this on film!! A shark totally ignores the bait and goes straight for the cage!! He gets his head inside the cage, while fellow diver Roger (who got married the day before), acted quickly to swim below the gaping sharks mouth and to avoid any injury. Apologies for any profanity in the video.. it was an out of control situation.”
The video was just uploaded a few days ago and has gone viral, with almost two million views already. Watch the video below and maybe think twice about shark cage diving.
