Netflix Reveals Fates For ‘GLOW’ And ‘Gypsy’

Both high-profile series premiered recently on Netflix, but only one will live to see another day. Any guesses on which one?

The streaming service ordered another round of its wrestling comedy, GLOW. The Alison Brie vehicle received a Season 2 renewal with 10 more episodes. Not too surprising since the retro offering, based on 80s female wrestling program Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, received ‘glowing’ reviews. Still haven’t watched the show yet but plan on binge-watching it one rainy day in the future.

Sadly, the news wasn’t great for Gypsy. Naomi Watts’ first starring television series was canceled after a freshman run consisting of 10 episodes. Unlike GLOW, critics weren’t too kind, giving the psychological thriller mixed reviews. It currently holds only a 45 percent rating on Metacritic.

I’m a little surprised Netflix canceled Gypsy given the marquee talent involved. The streaming service sure is trigger happy these days, canceling The Get Down, Sense8 and Girlboss in recent weeks. Netflix C.E.O. Reed Hastings wasn’t kidding when he revealed his new strategy to push for more cancellations. “We have to take more risk, you have to try more crazy things. Because we should have a higher cancel rate overall,” he told CNBC.
