I am sure, without a doubt, that I would be killed off by natural selection if we were at a different point in time. Obviously, I wouldn’t be creating children and passing along my genes due to my relations with men, not women. But, I would personally be dead meat due to my “blindness”. I hate having poor vision.
I look good in glasses and I’m fortunate enough to be able to wear contacts, but I find them both a burden and detest them. I don’t think those who have never had issues with their vision really understand how much of a pain it can be.
- 1. I have to plan my day and wear my contacts and glasses appropriately. I can’t wear my contacts while staring at a computer all day and I need to wear contacts when I’m at the gym or exercising because I sweat so much. I have to be prepared for all scenarios, even just switching to sunglasses I need to have my prescription ones with me, or I need to carry my contacts and sunglasses.
- 2. If I stay over somewhere and the person doesn’t wear contacts, I have to sleep with my contacts in, which I hate doing, or I may resort to leaving my contacts in shot glasses with some water over night.
- 3. Glasses, contacts, eye appointments, contact solution and prescription sunglasses are all really expensive and a constant expense. Can easily reach $1,000 every two years.
- 4. It you are fortunate enough to be eligible for eye surgery, it’s really expensive, you have to agree to pointing a laser into your eye and you risk complications with your eye sight.
- 5. Contacts can get kind of stuck back in your eye socket and it’s a real pain in the ass to be able to retrieve them. This can easily happen just by rubbing your eyes.
- 6. Glasses are dust, dirt and smudge magnets. They are in constant need of cleaning.
- 7. When it rains, undoubtedly water will be attracted to your lenses and you can’t see. Not to mention that as soon as you walk indoors your glasses will fog up.
- 8. Contacts are NOT comfortable. There’s a piece of plastic, or whatever it is, in your eye. You can constantly feel it there. Your eyes get dry and irritated and sometimes the only answer is to take them out.
- 9. You may be blind without them. I cannot roll over in the night and read the clock unless it is really close. I can’t get out of bed and function without putting my glasses on. I even have a hard time shaving without putting my glasses on because I can’t see where the hairs are at. I don’t even have a super strong prescription.
- 10. When you bend over, lean over, jump, or move the quickly your glasses may fall off or move. Nothing worse than bending over and your glasses falling off, especially when wiping your butt.
So all you out there with perfect vision, be thankful that you have it easy and be nice to those of us who are inferior to you.

I have to wear contacts/glasses as well, so I definitely feel your pain. I’ve been wearing Night & Days for the past few years and love them. They’re much more comfortable than conventional contacts, I don’t have to worry about sleeping over at a friend’s house, and I actually get to see when I wake up. Yes, they’re more expensive but for me the benefits are definitely worth it.

I was blind for 11 years and I got the surgery when I was 19 or 20.. can’t really remember.
IT’S THE BEST THING I’VE EVER DONE! Honestly, it’s a bit pricey, but think of all the money you will save not buying contacts twice a year, or glasses (or expesinve glasses you label whores) or solution.
Trust me, if you can get it…GET IT!

get the night & day contacts – you can sleep with them in because they allow a lot more air circulation to your eye – i take them out and soak them twice a week – otherwise i dont’ even know they’re there.
i’m nervous about lasik but think i’ll do it soon

Aww I feel bad for you :( I know several people who wear contacts and glasses but never knew how hard it felt to need them. Out of the last 11 years of my life I’ve honestly spent a third to a half years accumulated in front of the tv and/or computer (game and tv junkie) but still don’t need glasses. I guess I really should consider myself lucky considering the things I have to complain about myself.

Ditto on the night & day. They’re great! First few times I had them on I completely forgot they were there. Now I don’t wear them overnight if I can help it and I use Clear Care solution that scrubs them clean of proteins (but has to do it over 6 hours) to prolong their useful life.

P.S. Men are sexier when they wear glasses

I’m told I look great with glasses (ok, I KNOW I look great with glasses haha), but I sure miss the days of good vision. This article and Tommy’s comment made me go research Lasik. :)
It will be awhile before I can get it done. I’ve only had glasses for a year, and I guess your vision needs to be stable for 2 years before the procedure, which makes sense. Maybe I’ll check into the Night & Day contacts in the meantime, especially for soccer.

Ever considered laser surgery? My boss had it done and he says it was WAY worth it.

Bahaha, you’re right christof, we’ll call it the “nichol ‘sleepover’ contingency plan” ;) …sounds classier that way.
and topher, i heard more and more job health plans cover some of the costs of it now as well! I have 20/20, but would likely get the surgery myself if it meant never having to stick my finger into my eye, daily, ever again.

DONT sleep with your contacts in or put them in water in a shot glass! I did this over Christmas where I was constantly going out maybe three nights in a row, and thus, took very poor care of my contact lenses. And if you were like me, you probably have disposables that you wear past the date.
Needless to say…I developed a very bad cornea infection and only now (June) am I able to wear contacts again, and only 2 times a week! I have to get them checked every three weeks and my eyes are constantly dry, so i’m always putting drops in, it’s a little embarssing sticking drops in your eyes every hour.
Don’t let this happen to you.

My health plan only covers 250 dollars of the 4 grand I believe. Not much of the cost. I’ll get laser eventually. I’m holding off now because i just dropped so much cash on new lenses, contacts and my eye exams. BULL
And # 2 has occurred in many scenarios ;-)
