Last week, Tyrell told you about the recent 2011 GLAAD Award recipients at the New York event: Ricky Martin & Russell Simmons. Since it isn’t televised on primetime television, I thought I’d share with you both of their acceptance speeches.
The “Cup of Life,” one of Ricky Martin’s hits played as he walked up to accept his award. He’s been very grateful to GLAAD as they have been very supportive through his process in coming out. Recently, Ricky Martin was being attacked by someone in the media in Puerto Rico and he asked GLAAD what he should do. They got on a plane and went there and helped diffuse the situation, moving Puerto Rico one more step in the right direction towards equality. “I just wanna be free. I can say that today, I’m free.” So touching, like how many years has he wanted to say those words? My favorite part is when he thanks his boyfriend, Carlos.
Then, onto the godfather of hip hop, Russell Simmons. This guy is truly inspiring and such a role model. He’s been quoted as saying, “You can’t fight for human rights for some, without for the human rights and the civil rights for all.” They show a video that explains what he’s all about, and how passionate he is about equal rights that you can see why he was honored with the award. You must watch the video.
