Comedian Gilbert Gottfried has been fired by Aflac (insurance company) over a series of tweets he made, joking about the tsunami and earthquake in Japan. Gottfried was the voice of the duck mascot but has since been fired and will be replaced as they search nationwide for a new voice. So, just what were these terrible tweets that ruffled everyone’s feathers? Here they are:

  • “Japan is really advanced. They don’t go to the beach. The beach comes to them.”
  • “I just split up with my girlfriend, but like the Japanese say, ‘They’ll be another one floating by any minute now.’”

Do you think Aflac was justified in firing Gilbert Gottfried over the tsunami jokes?

Aflac released a statement regarding their decision to get rid of Gottfried over the tweets:

“Gilbert’s recent comments about the crisis in Japan were lacking in humor and certainly do not represent the thoughts and feelings of anyone at Aflac … Aflac will immediately set plans in motion to conduct a nationwide casting call to find a new voice of the iconic Aflac Duck.”

This isn’t the first time he’s been pushing the limits (to say the least) with his Twitter. Back in September, when one of his former “Roast” comrades (Greg Giraldo) passed away, he took to his Twitter and posted the following “too soon” tweet: “If Greg Giraldo is cremated, will that be the ‘Greg Giraldo Roast’?”
