Movie Review: Get Hard

Get Hard is easily the most ridiculous movie of the year so far but it isn’t without its merits. While I try to be honest with myself when it comes to expectations I have to say the bar was pretty low going in to this one. I hadn’t watched the trailer, but everything Will Ferrell has done since Step Brothers really hasn’t hit the mark for me.

Kevin Hart co-stars in the movie about an investment banker who prepares for jail time with the help of the guy who washes his car. If you think you’re ready for the racial and gay stereotypes that ensue let me tell you… You’re not. Get Hard is certainly not for everyone, especially for the faint of heart but even in its most crass and low-brow moments it attempts a social satire that while extremely rude in its delivery is often effective in its message.

The basic idea of the film is stupid in its absurdity. Ferrell plays James King who is wrongfully convicted of investment fraud and enlists the help of his car washer, Darnell (Hart) –who he assumes, based on his skin color, has gone to jail – to teach him how to survive his prison sentence and above all avoid being raped.

Both main characters are easy enough to like and are decently acted by both Ferrell and Hart, though having said that Ferrell plays the same character in most of his films. The two actors work really well together and I think that is this movie’s biggest strength. Another of its strengths is that it’s not just crass for the sake of being crass. As previously mentioned, there is a social satirical quality to the film that makes it a little more dynamic than your run-of-the-mill Ferrel flick.

The humor in the film is extremely hit and miss. Some joke will have you laughing out loud while others will make you cringe in your seat. A lot of the humor is often repeated ad nauseam – especially the “rape humor” if you can even call it that.

Overall the film isn’t entirely unenjoyable and does offer up a few good laughs. Definitely a lot better than I had expected and certainly one of Ferrell’s best films of the last few years. If you aren’t easily offended you might enjoy seeing this film. For those of you that are easily offended I recommend staying home.
