“Being out has never been so in.” Amen sister. I first wrote about G.B.F. earlier this year. With awesome one-liners like, “Are my arms looking Michelle Obama toned or Madonna scary?” and “You don’t even sound like the ones on Bravo. We can totally gay you over,” it’s Jawbreaker meets Mean Girls meets Clueless. The wickedly delicious teen comedy begins its limited run on DirecTV today, November 22 until December 19.
In a preview scene uploaded by DirecTV, Tanner (Michael J. Willet) is outed by his classmates. Social warfare erupts when three high school clique queens battle for supremacy by immediately pouncing on Tanner to make him over into their ideal arm candy. The three queens- drama diva Caprice (Xosha Roquemore), Mormon princess ‘Shley (Andrea Bowen) and blonde fashionista Fawcett (Sasha Pieterse)- force him to choose between popularity and his true friends which includes his BFF Brent (Paul Iacono).
Director Darren Stein assembled a great cast, mixing newbies with veteran actors. A few notable names include Andrea Bowen (Desperate Housewives), Megan Mullally (Will & Grace), Natasha Lyonne (American Pie), Rebecca Gayheart (Jawbreaker), Jonathan Silverman (Weekend at Bernie’s) and Sasha Pieterse (Pretty Little Liars). Check out the preview scene below, along with the official trailer.
G.B.F. tells the story of two closeted best friends, Tanner (Michael J. Willett, United States of Tara) and Brent (Paul Iacono, The Hard Times of R.J. Berger). Brent longs for the spotlight and has a plan that will make him the most popular kid in school. He believes that coming out will make him instantly popular, as the newest must-have teen girl “accessory”: The G.B.F. (Gay Best Friend). Tanner on the other hand, would rather fly under the radar and graduate from high school without ever being noticed.
When things don’t go according to plan and Tanner is outed instead of Brent, the two boys go from B.F.F.s to instant frenemies and the three most popular girls in school — queen-of-mean bombshell Fawcett (Sasha Pieterse, Pretty Little Liars), drama club diva Caprice (Xosha Roquemore, Precious) and sweet, Mormon good-girl ‘Shley (Andrea Bowen,Desperate Housewives) launch an all-out social war to win Tanner’s status-enhancing friendship.
