One of the things my friends like to tease me the most about is the fact that I’m actually a geek. I love to read fantasy books, I love to play video games (especially RPG’s)… hell, I even used to play Dungeons & Dragons!
In addition to those things, I also used to be a World of Warcraft player and one of the friends I used to play with passed me this golden nugget of awesome-ness this morning: Gay Pride Week in World of Warcraft!!!
For those who are inexperienced in the world of online gaming, World of Warcraft (WoW) is set up with around 50 or so servers. When you create a character, you choose which server you want to play on and you will only be able to interact with other players on that same server with that character. The Proudmoore Server just hosted their fifth annual Pride celebration and parade, which was put on the guilds “The Spreading Taint” (I could really make some hilarious jokes with that name, but I’ll leave them to your imagination) and “The Stonewall Family“.
The Gay Pride celebration was complete with a parade, a boat cruise and a beach party at “Booty Bay” (ha ha ha). It also included special events such as a Nude Duel Championship, Avatar Modeling, DJ Competition and a user-created parad float competition.
Now, I’ll be the first to admit that this is uber-geekiness at its finest, but what I love so much about this is the fact that it really would’ve taken a lot of time, work and organization for these people to put it together. Geekiness aside, the fact that it meant enough to people to put this together and to show their Pride and acceptance in this medium is really fantastic. What’s more is that I find it really cool that so many people chose to be a part of the virtual celebration- especially when this type of thing isn’t stereotypically “gay”.
Take a look at the video that was put together documenting the celebration, and congrats to all the WoW users who took part, organized and made this happen! You can also see additional videos on each of the guild pages that organized the event.

Kevin, there is no shame in admitting that you play(ed) Dungeons & Dragons, or that you like RPGs – who doesn’t? LOL. BTW, I had a 21st level MU-Thief that fought and defeated Orcus. But I digress!
However, if you actually got dressed up as little Hobbits, Gnomes, or as Clerics and Paladins, then you might have a problem. ;)

Ha ha ha – thanks Rome. I can assure you I’ve never dressed up as a Hobbit, Gnome, Cleric, Paladin or any other such thing. The whole live-action thing was too much for even me. =P
