When Queen announced plans for a biopic in 2010, Sacha Baron Cohen was initially tapped to play Freddie Mercury. Three years later, Cohen dropped out due to creative differences. The 45-year-old actor revealed to Howard Stern earlier this year as to why he left the project.
“The problem is — and I think it’s with any biopic, and I fully understand why Queen wanted to do this — if you’re in control of your rights and your life story, why wouldn’t you depict yourself as great as possible?” He added, “I said, ‘Listen, not one person is going to see a movie where the lead character dies from AIDS, and then you see the band carry on.’”
At last, the long-gestating film has finally found its new Mercury. Rami Malek will play the legendary singer in Bohemian Rhapsody. The Mr. Robot star is certainly having a breakout year. He just won the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama just months ago.
Bryan Singer is reportedly in talks to direct the biopic, based on a screenplay by Anthony McCarten (The Theory of Everything). Original Queen band members Brian May and Roger Taylor will serve as music producers.
Do you think Rami is a good choice to play Mercury? Or would Cohen done a better job? Weigh in below.
