Just ahead of the Shameless Season 9 premiere on September 9, one of the leads just dropped a major bombshell. It appears Emmy Rossum, who plays Fiona Gallagher, is leaving the show. At least it looks that way based on a lengthy Facebook post which fans are taking as a goodbye letter.
“The opportunity to play Fiona has been a gift,” Rossum writes. “There are few characters — female or otherwise — as layered and dynamic. She is a mother lion, fierce, flawed and sexually liberated. She is injured, vulnerable, but will never give up. She is living in an economic depression, but refuses to be depressed. She is resourceful. She is loyal. She is brave. I knew it the second I read the pilot script, this was different, this was special. … Quite simply, the last eight years have been the best of my life.”
The 31-year-old actress has starred on the show since the very beginning. Her character Fiona is the oldest Gallagher sibling who had to step up to become the matriarch of her wild and messy family.
Season 9 will air in two parts. The first seven episodes begin September 9 and end October 21. The remaining seven episodes start rolling out January 20, 2019. Guest stars booked for the upcoming season include Katey Sagal and Courtney Cox.
