Ellen DeGeneres Hosts Reunion To Celebrate 20th Anniversary Of Her Coming Out Episode

On April 30, 1997, ABC aired a two-part episode of the sitcom, Ellen, where the titular character came to the realization that she was a lesbian. Despite threats from advertisers and religious groups, “The Puppy Episode,” was an enormous ratings success, won multiple awards and became a cultural phenomenon. Sadly, the high was short-lived and the series was canceled after one more season with Ellen DeGeneres and guest star Laura Dern receiving career backlash.

This week on DeGeneres’ daytime talk show, the 59-year-old comedian will host a reunion featuring series regulars Joely Fisher, David Anthony Higgins and Clea Lewis, as well as guest stars Oprah Winfrey and Laura Dern. Winfrey played her therapist during the historic episode, while Dern played the object of Ellen’s affection.

The 20th anniversary celebration takes place on the Friday, April 28 episode of The Ellen Show. Until then, check out another pic below from the reunion.
