Ed McMahon Dead at 86

The legendary, former Tonight Show sidekick and American Family Publishers’ Sweepstakes spokesperson passed away this morning from various health problems he had been having over the past few months.

He was also the host of the popular show, Star Search that gave so many their big break. Many of these stars are sad to hear of today’s news. Britney Spears updated her Twitter status @britneyspears about an hour ago to say: “I am deeply saddened by today’s news about Ed McMahon. He is responsible for giving so many artists their first shot including myself.” And, of course you can forget the phrase he made famous, “Heeeeere’s Jonny!”

Although the face of the sweepstakes, over the past year he has faced many financial difficulties after falling behind on his mortgage by a significant amount of money. In addition, he was quite occupied over the past few years settling lawsuits against a hospital and doctors stemming back to a neck injury. He had sued many insurance companies and contractors over mold in his house, collecting about $7 million dollars.

After such a long and successful career, and being such an inspiration to so many, we hope that he passed away peacefully.

Rest in peace ED!

  • Poor Ed…in the sunset of his life, he was so cash strapped. He could barely walk and talk. Let’s hope he and Johnny Carson set up a Tonight Show in heaven, and interview Jesus as their first guest. RIP Ed, thanks for the laughs and inspiration.

    Say what?

  • RIP Ed McMahon. The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and Ed McMahon is timeless Americana. Let us also not forget that Ed McMahon was the host of the Star Search game show, which was really the original American Idol if you think about it.
