For the first time in Dancing With The Stars history, the Final 3 was comprised of three female celebrities. Girl power definitely prevailed this season. After last night’s performances, Melissa Rycroft and Tony Dovolani lead with a perfect 60, with Kelly Monaco and Val Chmerkovskiy close behind at 59 and Shawn Johnson and Derek Hough trailing with 57. Would Shawn and Derek’s decision to repeat their rule-breaking dance cause them the crown? Luckily for them, tonight had each couple performing one more dance- an instant one. Perhaps they could close the gap with a flawless routine.
Kelly & Val picked an Instant Jive and scored a 28.5. Melissa and Tony then followed with an Instant Samba which also netted them 28.5 points. Lastly, Shawn & Derek performed an Instant Cha Cha that gave them a perfect score of 30. With all the judges’ scores factored in here’s where everyone stood. In first were Melissa & Tony with 88.5, Kelly & Val and Shawn & Derek followed with 87.5 and 87.0 respectively. Now all that remained was to factor in the viewer votes. Did the public push Shawn & Derek to their much-predicted win? Find out below.
Before I reveal the winner, I just wanted to quickly skim over the filler for the two-hour finale. Pretty much everything was a retread of previous performances. The only new one worth mentioning was Pamela Anderson’s dance with a bevy of male dancers to Grace Potter & The Nocturnals‘ “Paris (Ooh La La)”. It was sexy and actually not bad. Too bad Anderson didn’t show this type of dance prowess and agility during the competition. She might’ve lasted more than one week. Without further ado, let’s find out who won the All-Stars mirrorball trophy.
The first one knocked out of the running was sadly Kelly Monaco and Val Chmerkovskiy. I was rooting for them, admittedly more for Val than Kelly ;) That left Season 8 alums Shawn and Melissa to duke it out. Back in their original season, Johnson won with Rycroft coming in at third. Gilles Marini came in second. Would this time be different? Did the underdog come out on top? SHOCKINGLY, YES SHE DID. To my surprise Rycroft won which also gave Tony Dovolani his first trophy. FINALLY. The joy on his face was priceless. Watch it below.
As happy as I am for both Melissa and Tony, I was hoping either Kelly or Shawn would win. For me, I think the winner for any All-Stars season should be a previous winner. It should be the best of the best. I wonder what went wrong for Shawn & Derek. Did their disregard to the judges’ rules turn off voters? I thought for sure bringing in the gold-winning Fab 5 from the 2012 London Olympics would’ve sealed the deal. I guess not.
What did you think of tonight’s finale? Did the right team win? Who were you rooting for? Are you looking forward to Dancing With The Stars 16th season in 2013? Sound off below.
