Coming off their worst season to date (ratings wise), it’s not surprising American Idol producers have had difficulties filling seats on the judging panel. They asked Keith Urban back from last season even though it was the show’s worst. Secondly, they’ve reportedly inked a deal for Jennifer Lopez to return after a season hiatus. Hell, they even resorted to bringing back Randy Jackson, albeit in a mentor role, even though he bid farewell to the show last year.
Instead of a huge recording superstar, FOX has tapped a big name behind the scenes to step front and center. E! News is reporting Lukasz Gottwald, a.k.a. Dr. Luke, will fill the remaining vacant slot. Dr. Luke began his career as a lead guitarist for the house band on Saturday Night Live but rose to prominence as the guy behind Kelly Clarkson’s breakout hit “Since U Been Gone.”
While not a huge name, I think Dr. Luke isn’t a bad choice. He doesn’t come with all that celebrity baggage Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj brought with them. This way, the show can shift its focus back on the contestants. With that being said, I still would’ve preferred the All-Star Idol alum panel idea that floated around a few months ago. Don’t you agree?
