The Royals Are Coming In ‘Downton Abbey’ Official Trailer

The hearts of millions of Downton Abbey fans broke in 2015 when it was announced the sixth season would be its last. Four years later, the long-awaited movie arrives in theaters. We finally have our first extended look.

The film will reportedly pick up approximately 18 months after the end of the series. At this time, King George V (grandfather of the current British monarch, Elizabeth II) and his wife Queen Mary are in power. Their visit to Downton will be at the center of the film as the Crawley family and staff prepare for this momentous occasion.

Several of the show’s original stars including Hugh Bonneville, Laura Carmichael, Jim Carter, Brendan Coyle, Michelle Dockery, Kevin Doyle, Joanne Froggatt, Matthew Goode, and Maggie Smith, among others, are set to appear.

The television series followed the lives of the Crawley family and the servants who worked for them at the turn of the 20th century in an Edwardian English country house. Over its 6 seasons, the series garnered 3 Golden Globe Awards, 15 Primetime Emmy Awards, 69 Emmy nominations in total, making Downton Abbey the most nominated non-US television show in the history of the Emmys – even earning a Special BAFTA award and a Guinness World Record for the highest critically rated TV show along the way.
