“New York, New York. Big city of dreams, but everything in New York aint always what it seems.”
That line from a Grandmaster Flash song would be the last form of public communication DJ AM would have- it was posted on his Twitter account on August 25th. Born Adam Goldstein, Nicole Ritchie’s former fiancee DJ AM has apparently died of an apparent overdose at his apartment in New York City. Sources say DJ AM had not been seen or heard from for a few days. A friend of his who went to check on him called the cops after not getting a response after knocking on his apartment door. It was then that The NYPD discovered his body and found drug paraphernalia in his apartment leading them to think it was a drug overdose.
Last year, you might remember DJ AM and Travis Barker (Blink 182) miraculously survived a plane crash in South Carolina. The learjet they were in overshot the runway and burst into flames. He suffered severe burns from the crash. It’s almost like a scene straight out of Final Destination. According to friends, DJ AM had been working hard to overcome his addiction to drugs and was even working with MTV to produce a show, Gone Too Far, to help young people kick their drug addiction. The show which featured concerned families staging interventions for their loved ones using drugs was set to air on MTV in October.
A Hollywood club regular and part of the band Crazy Town who produced the hit “Butterfly”, DJ AM didn’t burst onto the national scene until he dated and later engaged Nicole Ritchie. After his relationship ended with Richie, he was involved with another high-profile starlet, Mandy Moore. Over his career, he made notable appearances on Punk’d, Entourage and Ritchie’s Simple Life. Always part of the nightlife, DJ AM became Rain Nightclub’s regular Friday night DJ in 2009 and also co-owns the ultra-hip club, LAX.
Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1973, DJ AM was 36 at the time of his death.
According to TMZ.com, DJ AM had been “completely devastated” over a recent breakup with his girlfriend, Hayley Wood. Sources say she was the one who called over their relationship within the last week. Despite being sober for a number of years, the stress of his recent breakup and the trauma suffered from the plane crash caused him to start using drugs again.
