Old School Flashback Battle: Disney Songs From The 90s

Just in case you were wondering what inspired me to write this post, you can thank/blame the CW’s Beauty and the Beast. While the show starring Kristin Kreuk and that sexy Jay Ryan wasn’t nearly as bad as critics panned it to be, there were a couple things I wish were included. What you ask? Perhaps a singing teapot and candlestick 😉 Obviously I kid, but watching the show made me nostalgic for the animated film’s theme song by Peabo Bryson and Celine Dion.

During the Disney Renaissance era (late 80s and 90s), the Mickey Mouse studio returned to making successful animated films. Year after year, Disney raked in boffo dollars by adapting well-known stories which appealed to the masses and critics alike. Beauty and the Beast also became the first animated film nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture. The Lion King til this day still remains as the highest-grossing traditionally animated film in history.

Not only were Disney films successful at the box office during this time, but they also fared well on the Billboard charts. Both The Lion King and Pocahontas OST hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200 album chart and The Little Mermaid was certified 6x platinum. A few of the films even earned Best Oscar nods for their respective theme songs. Take a stroll down Disney memory lane below and find out what my Top 5 Disney Songs from the 1990s are after the videos.

My Top 5 Disney Theme Songs

If I were to pick my favorites from the above list, they would have to be in this order.

  • 1. A Whole New World (Peabo Bryson & Regina Belle)
  • 2. Colors of the Wind (Vanessa Williams)
  • 3. Reflection (Christina Aguilera)
  • 4. Circle of Life (Elton John)
  • 5. Beauty and the Beast (Peabo Bryson & Celine Dion)

And by far, the worst song hands down goes to All-4-One and their atrocity that was “Someday” from The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Don’t you agree? What was your favorite and least favorite Disney song from the 90s? Sound off below.

  • Chris

    None if the above!!!!!

  • Chris

Oh wait, theme songs… Ignore me lol

  • rogelio

Beauty and the beast is just a magical film and also its music…

  • Owen

I love Disney songs as well but I sort of wish you posted videos where the original movie singers sang instead. Most of the videos above are covers of the movie versions.

Take Reflection for instance. Mad props to Christina, and God knows I love her to bits, but she cannot top Lea Salonga’s (singing voice of Mulan as well as Jasmine, to those who didn’t know!) version of it. The “pop-ness” of Xtina’s cover kind of ruins the message of the song for me. Plus I sort of wish Brad Kane (Alladin’s singing voice) was up there instead. God knows how cute his boyish voice is. Or Roger Bart (Hercules’ singing voice). His voice is pretty charming, as well. Lol.

  • Sone

I agree with Owen, with the movie song version of Aladdin at least. It sounds better, innocent-pure-&sweet. The rest I’m OK with their pop versions.

    My Top 5 are:
A Whole New World (movie version / Aladdin)
    Colors of The Wind (Pocahontas)
Beauty and the Beast (Beauty & The Beast)
You’ll Be in My Heart (Tarzan)
Go the Distance (Hercules) # I also like Ricky Martin’s Spanish Version

  • Mitchell

Part of Your World from The Little Mermaid is still my favourite.

  • Mikey

I only really like two of the selections above:
“Circle of Life” and “Colors of the Wind”.

My top five would have to be…
    – Be Our Guest (Beauty and the Beast)
    – Circle of Life (Movie/Pop Version, The Lion King)
    – A Whole New World (Movie Version, Aladdin)
    – Colors of the Wind (Movie/Pop Version, Pocahontas)
    – Reflection (Movie Version! Gotta love Lea Salonga.)

  • Jay

I love the songs sung by Lea Salonga.
