‘Dear Evan Hansen’ Heading To The Big Screen

Musicals are huge moneymakers these days, especially their soundtracks. It’s no surprise another Broadway hit is getting a feature film treatment.

Universal Pictures has acquired the rights to Dear Evan Hansen. Wonder director, Stephen Chbosky, is set to direct with original playwright Steven Levenson penning the script. Marc Platt and Adam Siegel are set to produce the adaptation with lyricists Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, who wrote the music for the show, also serving as executive producers. However, the best news is Ben Platt, who originated the titular role, is in early talks to reprise the character.

Dear Evan Hansen earned nine Tony nominations, winning six including Best Musical, Best Score and Best Actor for Platt. The musical tells the story of a young man with social anxiety disorder who so yearns to make a connection with his peers that he fabricates a relationship with a deceased student to become closer to the boy’s family. When a classmate commits suicide, shy Evan Hansen finds himself at the center of the tragedy and turmoil.

Have you seen the hit musical? Do you think Platt should reprise his role or do you think someone else should play the part in the feature film? Sound off below.
