Cyndi Lauper Covers Dolly Parton’s ‘Hard Candy Christmas’

The gay gods have been really generous this holiday season with regards to Christmas albums. Kylie Minogue, RuPaul and her Drag Race alums are just a few who have dropped Yuletide offerings. LGBT ally Cyndi Lauper enters the game by covering an equally beloved gay icon- the one and only Dolly Parton.

The “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” singer covers Parton’s “Hard Candy Christmas.” Though it has a festive title, technically it’s not a holiday song. Dolly recorded it for her 1982 film The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas co-starring Burt Reynolds.

Lauper’s cover is off her forthcoming country album Detour, which is filled with her renditions of classic country tracks from the 1950s and 1960s. Before you comment, I’m also a bit puzzled how this 80s track got included. Whatever. I love Lauper and Parton, so I’m all over this.

Cyndi reveals to Rolling Stone the idea to cover this track came from a Nashville hotel where she was staying at. “What Would Dolly Do?” was written above the room’s artwork. Check out her Parton homage below.

This is ok, but I still love Dolly’s “Whorehouse” version best.
