First, a little humour: A little late on reporting this, but Sasquatch headliners Nine Inch Nails posted a great April Fool’s Joke last week. They announced their new album Strobe Light produced by none other than Timbaland! The album features tracks like: “Everybody’s doing it (featuring chris martin, jay-z AND bono)” [BARF], “Still hurts (featuring alicia keys)” [Ha ha, that actually might be good], and “Even closer (featuring justin timberlake and maynard james keenan)” [Oh lord].

I’m glad I was in on the joke before viewing the tracklist, because the saturation of unnecessary collaborative artists reeks so closely to what Timbaland has been spewing out the last couple of years (worst offense: Chris Cornell, PCD, & One Republic at Fashion Rocks) I just may have believed it.

Anyway, here’s another introduction to one of the artists playing at this year’s Sasquatch Music Festival: Toronto’s Electronic Spazz duo, Crystal Castles.

crystal_castles_-_self-titledCrystal Castles took their band name from She-Ra: Princess of Power. Crystal Castles is also the name of an old Atari video game, which is quite fitting, because when played on my iPod while up in Whistler, Brian commented that Crystal’s chaotic beeps and beats sounded like he was playing a video game… and that he was losing. Even though I’m pretty sure he meant it as an insult, that pretty much sums up my opinion of CC’s self-titled debut CD. There’s a lot of 8-bit electronic beeps, a lot of filtered vocals, and often a very high rate of beats per minute. I love it!

Here’s my favourite track of the album Alice Practice.

The Toronto-based duo has quite a tour resume under their belt. They have played alongside Metric, Friendly Fires, and Nine Inch Nails. In addition to playing Sasquatch this year, they’ve also played the Reading, Leads, and Glastonbury festivals in years past.

Crystal Castles is a group I’m very excited to see. They play the type of music that I love to hear live. It’s energetic, it’s frantic and it’s insane. Reviews from previous shows all highlight vocalist Alice Glass’ spastic on stage antics. I’m expecting a show similar in vein to Girl Talk’s intensity. The crowd will make or break it. I have faith though they’ll love it as the show is being held in the designated “Dance Tent”. Crystal Castles play on Saturday the 23rd, though if you won’t be attending Sasquatch they are currently on tour and will be hitting Vancouver on June 4th at the Commodore.
