What do Gwyneth Paltrow and Leighton Meester have in common? Both have aspirations of hee-hawing to the top of the country charts in an upcoming country music biopic. This December, the two will light up the screen in the movie-musical, “Country Strong“.

Paltrow will play Kelly Canter, a washed-up singer fresh out of rehab, looking for a comeback. While Leighton plays Chiles Stanton (love that name), a former beauty queen hoping to crossover to Nashville music royalty. If you watch the trailer below, you’ll see Paltrow giving Leighton a verbal smackdown at the end. It’s so cheesy, it’s BRILLIANT.

The movie also features real-life country superstar, Tim McGraw, who plays Canter’s husband and manages both female singers. Obviously complications arise when unsolved personal issues come into play. It also doesn’t help when hunky aspiring musician and songwriter Beau Williams, played by Garrett Hedlund, is thrown into the mix. When you’re that good-looking, you know emotions will rise high.

The film is slated for a December 22 limited release, just in time for Oscar consideration, with a January 7, 2011 wide release. Will it score nods during awards seasons? Jury is still out, but there’s no doubt the movie will score a hit soundtrack for the country charts. “Country Strong” has already released two singles to build buzz for the flick. “A Little Bit Stronger” will be released by country crooner, Sara Evans, while Paltow will release her own track, aptly called “Country Strong”.

Blair Waldorf would never be caught wearing that tacky 80s prom dress, but doesn’t Leighton look adorable in it.

I think this movie will hinge on whether or not audiences root for Gwyneth’s character. I don’t mind Paltrow, but sometimes she comes off as an elitist ice queen. Playing a country singer is something I would’ve never expected from her.

A drama centered on a rising country-music songwriter (Hedlund) who sparks with a fallen star (Paltrow). Together, they mount his ascent and her comeback, which leads to romantic complications involving her husband/manager (McGraw) and a beauty queen-turned-singer (Meester). – IMDB.com description
