According to Variety, the 56-year-old actor will play William Weatherall Wilkins, president of Fidelity Fiduciary Bank. Firth joins a star-studded cast which includes Meryl Streep, Ben Whishaw, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Emily Mortimer and Emily Blunt. The latter is playing the titular role made famous by Julie Andrews in the 1964 Disney movie.
Mary Poppins Returns takes place 25 years after the original film. Michael and Jane Banks are all grown up and suddenly get a visit from the magical nanny. The screenplay is based on The Mary Poppins Stories by P.L. Travers. Chicago director Rob Marshall will helm the project. The sequel will hit theaters on Dec. 25, 2018.
