Loosely based on Jane Austen’s novel, “Emma”, “Clueless” was the seminal teen movie of the 1990s. Many were surprised that a film about spoiled high school kids in Beverly Hills with a penchant for colorful ensembles would appeal to beyond the teen demographic. Much like “Pretty In Pink” in the 80s and “Mean Girls” in the 2000s, the Amy Heckerling-directed film impacted pop culture in a huge way and spawned numerous memorable quotes. By far my favorite was and still is, “She could be a farmer in those clothes.” I still utter that zinger til this day.

Given that two “Clueless” cast members have recently reunited on the small screen on ABC’s “Suburgatory”, I thought it was a perfect time to walk down memory lane. Not only did the teen flick create fashion trends and a whole new jargon of teen slangs, including referring to classmates as Baldwins, Bettys and Monets, but it also created instant stars. Most of the actors are now in their late 30s and early 40s. See what the cast did with their “Clueless” fame below.

Alicia Silverstone (Cher Horowitz)

Before Clueless

In her first feature film, Alicia made a huge splash as a young stalker in “Crush“. That role led her to become the MTV girl who appeared in those wicked Aerosmith music videos.

After Clueless

With “Clueless” being such a hit, naturally movie offers came her way. Sadly, Silverstone had a knack for picking bomb after bomb. “Batman & Robin”, “Excess Baggage”, and “Blast from the Past” were all commercial and critical failures. Though not a big film, I did enjoy her in 2005′s “Beauty Shop” with Queen Latifah. Her string of bad luck also followed her to television. She headlined the much-promoted “Miss Match” in 2005 which lasted less than a season. Hopefully, her recurring role on “Suburgatory” will lead to bigger and better things. One can’t be a lifetime spokesperson for the vegan lifestyle ;)

Stacey Dash (Dionne Davenport)

Before Clueless

Her first notable appearance was guest starring as Denise’s (Lisa Bonet) friend on “The Cosby Show“. She then appeared as Damon Wayon’s love interest in the romantic-crime comedy “Mo’ Money“.

After Clueless

She continued playing Dionne in the television version of “Clueless” on ABC and then on UPN. Notable roles include the film “View From The Top” with Gywneth Paltrow and television series “The Game” on BET and “Single Ladies” currently on VH1.

Brittany Murphy (Tai Frasier)

Before Clueless

Prior to playing the lovable Tai, Brittany guest starred on numerous sitcoms including “Murphy Brown”, “Blossom”, “Frasier” and one of my favorite drams “Party of Five“. “Clueless” was her second film feature credit.

After Clueless

Where to begin… Murphy has appeared in some great films including “Drop Dead Gorgeous“, Girl, Interrupted”, “8 Mile“, “Sin City”, and “Don’t Say A Word”. Remember her spooky delivery of “I’ll never tell”. Sadly, Murphy died in December 29, 2009 at the age of 32-years-old. Brittany also released a club hit in 2006 with Paul Oakenfold. How awesome was “Faster Kill Pussycat“?

Paul Rudd (Josh Lucas)

Before Clueless

For three years Paul Rudd appeared as Kirby on NBC’s “Sisters” starring Sela Ward and Swoosie Kurtz. Man, did I LOVE that show. His sole film credit before “Clueless” was the sixth installment of the “Halloween” franchise, “Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers“.

After Clueless

Paul is probably one of the more successful ones from the cast. He played Mike Hannigan, Phoebe’s husband on “Friends” for a couple of years. His film credits include “The Object of My Affection“, “The Cider House Rules”, “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgandy”, “The 40-Year-Old Virgin”, “Knocked Up“, “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” and numerous other movies.

Donald Faison (Murray Duvall)

Before Clueless

Donald’s most notable work prior to “Clueless” was guest starring on “Sabrina, The Teenage Witch“. He also had small roles in African-American films, “Juice”, “Sugar Hill” and “New Jersey Drive”.

After Clueless

Faison was another one who appeared in the television version of the film. Since then he’s built up an impressive resume of film and TV credits. He played Tracy on The WB’s “Felicity” and Christopher Turk for “Scrubs‘” entire nine seasons. Faison’s notable film roles include “Can’t Hardly Wait”, “Remember The Titans”, and “Uptown Girls” where he reunited with his “Clueless” co-star Brittany Murphy.

Elisa Donovan (Amber Mariens)

Before Clueless

Like Murphy, “Clueless” was Elisa’s big break. Her sole acting credit prior was guest spots on “Blossom“, again like Murphy.

After Clueless

Donovan’s Amber wasn’t a major character in the film, but that all changed for the television series. Might I even say, she was the breakout star when it moved to the small screen. Elisa later appeared on “Beverly Hills, 90210” and “Sabrina, the Teenage Witch”. On the silver screen, she starred in the SNL-inspired, “A Night at the Roxbury”. Fun fact, she appeared as one of the love interests in N’ Sync’s “I Drive Myself Crazy” music video.

Justin Walker (Christian Stovitz)

Before Clueless

Before he played the cute gay one who had a thing for “Spartacus“, Justin appeared on several episodes on “Northern Exposure”.

After Clueless

For the most part, he seems to have dropped out of the spotlight and appearing in only a few minor indie roles. Both IMDB.com and Wikipedia claim he’s working in the culinary business. The former has fans reporting he was spotted managing Tacone restaurant, while the latter states he’s the owner of Teddy Teadle’s Grill in Rancho Mirage, California.

Breckin Meyer (Travis Birkenstock)

Before Clueless

Much like many before him, Breckin Meyer got his start in horror films. He appeared in the sixth installment of the “Nightmare on Elm Street” franchise- “Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare“.

After Clueless

After playing the lovable stoner, Meyer continued to work in films. His long list of movies include “Can’t Hardly Wait”, “54“, “Go”, “Josie and the Pussycats” and the two Garfield movies. Currently, he’s on the small screen appearing with Mark-Paul Gosselaar in the TNT series, “Franklin & Bash“.

Jeremy Sisto (Elton)

Before Clueless

Coincidentally enough, he co-starred with Alicia Silverstone in the thriller, “Hideaway“, before “Clueless”.

After Clueless

Considering he had one of the more minor roles in “Clueless”, Jeremy has been very successful in his post-”Clueless” career. Along with appearing in the critical film, “Thirteen”, he’s starred as a regular in several successful television series including, “Six Feet Under”, “Law & Order” and now the hilarious “Suburgatory” which reunites him with Alicia Silverstone.

After writing this post, all of a sudden I have an urge to watch “Clueless” again. When was the last time you watched this film? Who was your favorite character and what was your favorite quote? Share your thoughts below.
