CHiPs Movie Adaptation Debuts First Trailer

The trend of rebooting classic television dramas and turning them into comedic films continues. Following in the footsteps of 21 Jump Street and Baywatch, the CHiPs movie adaptation is also going the funny route. I suppose it’s much easier this way than trying to update a cheesy cop show to a gritty action flick.

Taking on the roles of Jon Baker and Frank “Ponch” Poncharello, originated by Larry Wilcox and Erik Estrada, are Dax Shepard and Michael Peña. Baker and Ponch have just joined the California Highway Patrol (CHP) in Los Angeles but for very different reasons. Baker is a beaten up pro motorbiker trying to put his life and marriage back together. Poncherello is a cocky undercover Federal agent investigating a multi-million dollar heist that may be an inside job—inside the CHP.

The inexperienced rookie and hardened pro are teamed together, but clash more than click, so kickstarting a partnership is easier said than done. But with Baker’s bike skills combined with Ponch’s street savvy it might just work…if they don’t drive each other crazy along the way.

Shepard also wrote and directed the upcoming film. Adam Brody, Jessica McNamee, Ryan Hansen, David Koechner, Michael K. Williams, Maya Rudolph and Vincent D’Onofrio round out the cast. Shepard’s wife Kristen Bell also pops up. She plays his on-screen wife.

Check out the amusing trailer below. CHiPs rides into theaters on March 24.
