For a while, it seemed like finding a homo in the world of athletics was going to be impossible. The rumor was that if an athlete were to come out, he’d be ridiculed by fellow peers and colleagues. The rumor proved to be true when even straight athlete Sean Avery stood up for marriage equality with the Human Rights Campaign. A few sports casters and an athlete manager (Todd Reynolds) expressed the overwhelming disapproval of the fact.

However, that didn’t stop Phoenix Sun’s executive Rick Welts and former Villanova starter Will Sheridan from publicly stating that they were gay. Basketball star Charles Barkley recently stated in a radio interview that he is on the pro-gay bandwagon.

“They always try to make it like jocks discriminate against gay people. I’ve been a big proponent of gay marriage for a long time, because as a black person, I can’t be in for any form of discrimination at all.”

Back in the day, Charles Barkley was well known for his aggression on the court. But even then, he never let a slur like Kobe Bryant come out. Maybe that’s because he was always aware of the fact that he was playing against some gay players. He admits he knows that some NBA ballers are gay but doesn’t care about their sexual orientation.

“They always try to make it like jocks discriminate against gay people. I’ve been a big proponent of gay marriage for a long time, because as a black person, I can’t be in for any form of discrimination at all.”

With all the hate and stigma that has arisen from the sporting world lately, it’s refreshing to hear someone like Charles Barkley state that he is a supporter of such. Cheers to you. What do you think of Charles’ opinion on gay athletes and rights?
