Lionsgate debuted the first trailer for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire on Sunday night’s MTV Movie Awards. I have mixed feelings about this. While I enjoy getting a peek at the highly-anticipated sequel, I hate the fact I have to wait until November 22 to see the film. The wait is going to be excruciating.
For the first trailer, the movie studio avoided any footage of the Quarter Quell. Instead, it focuses on Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta’s (Josh Hutcherson) Victory Tour. After her rebellious joint win and public defiance, Katniss has become a beacon of hope. Clearly not happy with this, President Snow (Donald Sutherland) plots to take her down. ”Because of her, they all pose a threat. Because of her, they all think they’re invincible,” he says. Cue new cast member Philip Seymour Hoffman who plays new Head Gamemaker Plutarch Heavensbee.
THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE begins as Katniss Everdeen has returned home safe after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark. Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a “Victor’s Tour” of the districts. Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell) – a competition that could change Panem forever.
Sadly, Hoffman is the only newbie featured in the video. Jena Malone and Sam Claflin are nowhere to be seen. I fully expect Lionsgate to roll out a few more trailers in the coming months, revealing only a morsel of goodness each time. I was really looking forward to seeing the new aquatic arena where the previous victors battle it out. Hopefully, next time they reveal it.
