Friday night, Tyrell and I checked out the Britney Spears Femme Fatale concert here in Vancouver (which was amazing), but we never got as close as the handful of fans that spent $1,000 to get a VIP package that included a meet & greet with Brit before the show. One of the fans (Clay) asked for a hug while beside Britney for his photo, but she declined. Here’s how it happened in Clay’s words :
“I was the first in, so they didn’t tell me we weren’t allowed to ask. I asked her and she froze up, she seemed scared. She said ‘Um… erm,,, uhhh,’ and then looked at Larry. He shook his head no. BUT I DONT CARE. IT WAS AMAZING ANYWAYS. I told her I loved her, and she said ‘Awwwwee, thank you!’ and said “This tour book is for you! Enjoy the show!” It was surreal. I still cannot believe it. In shock.”
Do you think she should have given him a hug?

That’s Clay with Britney, above left. I don’t know what the big deal is in giving someone a hug. It’s like, “Get over yourself, you know?” That said, I’m sure there are some crazies out there that have freaked Britney out in the past by crossing the line – so this could be a security measure. Also, it could just be that they wanted to ensure nothing happened to her hair, makeup, or costume since she wasn’t wearing a robe like she has at meet & greets in previous cities. Who knows. (Sidenote: I met her makeup artist for the tour over the weekend when he came into my store!).
Since the concert, a few fans that watched her in Portland have posted pics of Britney hugging them (wearing a robe), so I guess it’s not a set rule that she doesn’t hug.
What do you think? If someone spends $1,000 on on your concert, should they get a hug or is that asking too much? I guess you’ll never catch Britney Spears wearing a “Free Hugs” t-shirt. LOL.

Yes, she definately should have. It’s just a hug! He wasn’t asking for a kiss, or a grab of the boob, just a hug. Gaga always hugs her fans.

Who knows… maybe she’d been hugging smelly people all week and just wanted a break. In her younger days, she definitely was more of a free spirit and very physically warm, but now she’s a lot more guarded. You can see that in her interviews as well. I guess it’s not too surprising after all she’s been through the past few years…

A few things: first, $1000 for a meet & greet ticket does not entitle you to a hug or any physical affection; second, if someone is uncomfortable hugging someone they shouldn’t have to, boundaries are a good thing; and third, have you noticed how she has the dead eyes, she doesn’t want to do this anymore and is just doing it cuz her parents have control over her again. Poor thing.

It seems rather weird that as an entertainer who is essentially on the clock, you wouldn’t be doing everything you could within reason to make every fan you get the chance to meet happy. Sure her rough experience preserving her personal life has led to a lot of guarded tendencies, but it should be no surprise to her or her management when a fan asks for a hug at a freaking meet and greet. Taking the opportunity to mingle with fans who come to her show is just as integral as putting on the show in the first place. Besides, fans like Clay are a representation of the millions of fans she’ll never get to meet who have been responsible for not just Spears’ paycheck, but the makeup artists who could easily touch up a lil smudge from a hug!

If you wouldn’t want to hug some guy that you felt creeped out by, neither would a celebrity. Don’t hold a celebrity to higher standards then you would hold your self. That’s little more than an exercise in hypocrisy.

This is right before the show – what if it was a psycho stalker that’s planning to do something to her, that would ruin the concert for EVERYONE!! There are people out there I wouldn’t hug for $1,000… So why should Britney?
