I haven’t been this inspired to write a Rising Artist Spotlight post in ages. Not to toot our own horns, but we’ve had a pretty decent track record highlighting upcoming musical acts before they’ve hit mainstream audiences- Jessie J, Karmin and Rita Ora to name a few. No disrespect to the latter, but this rising star could be the next Brit sensation and could easily outshine Ora in the near future.
17-year-old A*M*E (pronounced Amy) just dropped her new music video “Play The Game Boy” this week, and I’m already hooked. The Londoner definitely has a confidence and stage presence beyond her years. I had no idea who she was prior to this track. It’s pure pop perfection with a little hip hop swagger and a dash of 80s retro synth for good measure. I could be wrong, but I detect a little Chaka Khan sample in there. Despite growing up in war-torn Sierra Leone before moving to the UK, the talented youngster has an ability to create a catchy peppy pop hooks.
“It usually starts with a great concept, of course. Not too light-hearted, not too serious; a perfect pop song is a perfect blend of the two. It should grab you from the second you hear it. The lyrics have to mean something and the performance has to carry that meaning. What I love most about a perfect pop song is that with it you are never alone. That’s what makes me happiest about pop music. It is a friend when no-one else is. Tracks like TLC – “No Scrubs”, Madonna – “Holiday”, Jay – Z – “Hard Knock Life” or anything by Adele! All amazing pop songs.” – A*M*E
This past summer, A*M*E kept herself busy by touring with the likes of Jessie J, JLS, The Wanted, Rizzle Kicks, Cover Drive and Olly Murs. I’ve embedded her new music video “Play The Game Boy” below along with two other tracks. “Ride or Die” is a reggae-inspired jam in the vein of Rihanna’s “Rude Boy”. Lastly, a melodic track she co-wrote with Scottish songstress Emeli Sande (love her) titled “Find A Boy” is also below. Her vocals really shine on this track without all the electro-pop beats. Check them all out and see if A*M*E has the goods to achieve global success.
