Universal Studios is celebrating a big victory this weekend (besides the Fourth of July). The hilarious female driven comedy Bridesmaids has surpassed Sex & the City and become the top grossing female R-rated comedy ever. That’s an amazing feat for star Kirsten Wiig and producer Judd Apatow.
With this long weekend’s box office projections, Bridesmaids will domestically make an estimated $153.7 million. Sex & the City earned $152.6 million. And, it doesn’t look like Bridesmaids is giving an sign of slowing down.
Universal is also celebrating in the fact that this has now become the studios biggest romantic comedy success as well and the seventh most successful romantic comedy of all time. I know what you’re thinking… is Bridesmaids really a rom com? Well, Kristen Wiig’s character does get the boy in the end.
This is also the top grossing film for director and producer Judd Apatow. This film has now beat out his previous films Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby which grossed $148.2 million and Knocked Up which earned $148.8 million. Have you seen Bridesmaids yet?

The movie was disappointing overall. I laughed once during the movie (the gown selection scene). That was about it. It did have some good subtle moments (the one of Annie making the cupcake then eating it right after comes to mind), but the rest was really blah. The preview made the movie seem so good that it gave me such high expectations. I am a huge Kristen Wiig fan, but I just did not like this movie. I also did not like her hair on it. Something about it made it look like she was running for politics. I also didn’t get the Hangover comparisons (granted, I hated the Hangover), but that’s another subject. I would give it a 5/10.
