I’ve always known and have been told many times that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Being semi-health conscious I know I should be having my bowl of cereal & some fruit before heading to work. But alas, I like to sleep in in the morning and end up getting up an hour before I have to go into work and usually don’t have time to eat. I have been like this pretty much all my life and this habit of not eating breakfast started when I was in grade school. I went to private school and the school bus would pick us up at a certain time every morning. I remember as a child laying in bed being dressed by the nanny while I was still sleeping and all I had to do was literally get up, grab my bag, out the door and into the school bus. Breakfast was usually prepared by the time I got up but because I sleep in I don’t end up eating.
Although my metabolism hasn’t slowed down much (yes, I can still eat whatever I want. Don’t hate me ;), I have noticed that my energy levels have decreased by the time lunch time comes along and I tend to over eat having not eaten much for breakfast. Overeating during lunch equals lethargic carb coma. I usually grab a coffee and a muffin from the cafe on my way to work which usually holds me over. Although pastries really aren’t healthy and not the proper way to start the day. I usually try to get the banana blueberry muffin in lieu of the chocolate croissant hoping that it is healthier than the latter. I was talking to my new friend Tim, who works at a gym and is surrounded by trainers, about diet and he chastised me for not eating breakfast and reiterated the fact that it is the most important meal. So I started buying fruits like apples and bananas to have in the morning and for snacks. As far as cereal goes, the only one I really like is Vector sprinkled with some dried cranberries with soy milk. I am lactose intolerant and usually have to stay away from too much dairy. I also like Count Chocula but unfortunately that doesn’t have too much nutritional value so I will have to cross that off my list LOL.
I’m usually good with every other meal during the day. I eat my carbs during lunch and for dinner it’s usually chicken & salad or steamed veggies. I do realize that I am not eating enough meals throughout the day and would like to eventually increase my 4 meals a day to 6 in the hopes of boosting my metabolism.
What do you eat for breakfast? What would you recommend? I usually like fast convenient breakfast options with little to no cooking involved.
Wish me luck on breaking this bad old habit I have to a healthier more energetic me!

Even though you asked for me not to hate you for being able to eat whatever you want…I still do. ;) – Great article!

Breakfast smoothie:
1 cup unsweetened Almond Milk (or rice milk)….NOT into the soy or dairy.
1 Cup organic Frozen mixed berries (try it with frozen mangos for variation)
1 scoop full of “matcha green tea whey protein” from Natural Factors *OR* 1 scoop full of Vega hemp protein
*optional*
1 tablespoon of UDO’s 3,6,9 oil blend (a blend of essential fats that your body doesn’t produce on it’s own….again these are GOOD fats).
*optional* banana to thicken it up, but it’s great as is.
*optional* organic almond butter or peanut butter for EFA’s if not doing Udo’s.

I envy most of you for having that much time in the morning in preparing an elaborate breakfast!
I go with a cup of coffee, a piece of toast (whole grain, of course) with peanut butter and strawberry jam (PB & J). I might chug an extra glass of water in an attempt to get rid of coffee stain on my teeth – 5 times out of 10, I forget, though. Hehe.
I go to the gym after, then I have another PB & J sandwich for my second breakfast. (That’s right, I’m a pig; I eat breakfast twice.) If I’m feeling guilty about not eating enough, I might have a half a cup of cottage cheese also. At this point, I’m already at work, so who knows if I’ll actually remember to eat my cottage cheese.
Anyway, the point is, do eat breakfast! It’s good for ya – and I don’t think it necessarily need to be elaborate.

Yeah if I woke up 2 hours before I have to go into work I could work in a breakfast there but good point KC…I might just start with some toast (12 Grain wheat) and some fruit in the morning and coffee of course. And throw in a couple of protein shakes throughout the day.
