Powerful New ‘Boy Erased’ Trailer Puts Spotlight On Gay Conversion Crisis

77,000 people are currently being held in conversion therapy across America. Joel Edgerton’s latest directorial effort, Boy Erased, puts the spotlight on this crisis. It’s based on Garrard Conley’s 2016 memoir of the same name, recounting his own childhood in a fundamentalist Arkansas family who enrolled him in conversion therapy.

Boy Erased tells the story of Jared (Lucas Hedges), the son of a Baptist pastor in a small American town, who is outed to his parents (Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe) at age 19. Jared is faced with an ultimatum: attend a conversion therapy program – or be permanently exiled and shunned by his family, friends, and faith. Boy Erased is the true story of one young man’s struggle to find himself while being forced to question every aspect of his identity.

The film also stars Troye Sivan, Joe Alwyn, Xavier Dolan and Flea. In addition to directing and writing the screenplay, Edgerton also appears in the movie.

Ahead of its limited release in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco this Friday, November 2, Focus Features debuts a powerful new trailer. Watch it below. Boy Erased hits nationwide on November 16.
