Laura Dern, Zoe Kravitz and Shailene Woodley coming back to Big Little Lies isn’t at all shocking, but now it’s official. The trio are reprising their roles of Renata Klein, Bonnie Carlson and Jane Chapman respectively. They join previously announced returnees Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman, along with newbie Meryl Streep.
The 68-year-old legend will play Mary Louise Wright, the mother-in-law of Kidman’s character Celeste Wright and mother of Alexander Skarsgard’s Perry Wright. She arrives in Monterey concerned for the well-being of her grandchildren and to search for answers surrounding the death of her son Perry.
The first season of Big Little Lies took home eight Emmys and four Golden Globes. It’ll be interesting to see if it can repeat that success, especially if it moves to the drama category instead of competing in limited series.
Andrea Arnold takes over Jean-Marc Vallée to direct all seven episodes of Season 2. Vallée will still be involved, co-executive producing with David Kelley, Kidman, Witherspoon and others.
Big Little Lies is expected to return sometime in 2019.
